On 18 May 2013 Allison Arendse, Zakiyyah Hoosain, Don Maisels, Sandrine Mpazayabo and Dango Mwabane competed in the provincial round of the annual SAASTA Science Debate with five other selected schools.

This year's topic was Nanotechnology in water. The team was expected to delve into the economic perspective of this topic and draw up realistic proposals. The debate was adjudicated by specialists in the field of Nanotechnology and this form of debating.

The adjudicators were impressed with the arguments the young individuals of The Settlers were able to propose and at the end of this challenging debate The Settlers walked away with the second place trophy.

These young individuals brought much pride to The Settlers with this outstanding provincial achievement and we hope to see these individuals make their mark in the field of mathematics and science in the near future.
